How to choose winter clothing for your dog
Choose winter clothing according to how well your dog tolerates cold, the type of coat and undercoat, how intensely they move outdoors and the weather in which the garment will be used. An active dog on a brisk hike needs a different level of insulation from a short-haired dog on a calm winter walk or waiting between sports runs.
Insulation according to the dog and activity
The warmest garment is not automatically the best choice. During intense activity, a dog produces more body heat, whereas on a slow walk, while waiting or resting, stronger insulation may be useful.
Jacket, coat or full-body suit?
A classic winter jacket or coat mainly protects the torso and is easy to put on. A full-body suit adds coverage of the legs and a larger part of the body, which can be useful in frost, snow or for dogs that need more extensive protection.
Do not forget wind and moisture
How cold it feels is not determined by temperature alone. Wind, wet fur and snow can significantly affect a dog's thermal comfort. If the garment will also be used in snow or wet weather, consider wind and water protection as well as insulation.
Good winter clothing must keep the dog warm and fit correctly
Winter clothing should cover the necessary parts of the body without restricting walking or running. Always measure your dog according to the size chart for the specific model and check not only back length but also chest circumference and any other required measurements. Frequently asked questions about winter dog clothing
When does a dog need winter clothing?
There is no single temperature that applies to every dog. It depends on coat and undercoat, size, age, health, activity and weather. Winter clothing is used more often by short-haired and cold-sensitive dogs, puppies, seniors or dogs that spend longer periods waiting in the cold without intense movement.
How warm should dog clothing be?
Consider the individual dog and intended use above all. Lighter insulation may be enough for active movement, while calm walks, waiting or a very cold-sensitive dog may call for a more heavily insulated model.
Is a winter jacket or a full-body suit better?
It depends on the amount of coverage you need. A jacket or coat is easy to put on and mainly protects the torso. A full-body suit also covers more of the legs and body and can be practical in snow, frost or for dogs that need more extensive protection.
Can a dog wear a sweatshirt under winter clothing?
With some combinations, yes. Layering can be useful when you need to combine a thermal layer with protection from wind or moisture. Always make sure the layers do not press, bunch up or restrict movement.
How do I know whether winter clothing fits correctly?
The garment should not shift significantly while walking, rub or press in the armpits, or restrict movement of the shoulders and legs. At the same time, it should sufficiently cover the areas it is intended to protect. Always measure the dog according to the manufacturer's instructions and size chart.
