How to choose a durable dog toy?
Durable dog toys are made for more intensive play and dogs that are tough on ordinary toys. Durability is not the only thing that matters, however. Also consider your dog's size, jaw strength, the size of the toy and, most importantly, how the dog will use it.
Choose the material for the type of play
A toy is stressed differently during retrieving than during intense chewing or tugging. So do not choose only by the label “durable”; also consider what the particular toy is designed for.
The right size matters
The toy should match the size of your dog and their mouth. A toy that is too small can be dangerous, while one that is too large may be difficult to grip and uncomfortable to play with.
More durable does not mean indestructible
Even a very tough toy cannot withstand everything. With a strong chewer, regularly check the surface, joints and any damage. Once pieces start coming off, it is time to replace the toy.
Choose a toy for what you do together
Easy-to-grip balls and other throwing toys work well for retrieving. If you enjoy interactive play with your dog, also look at tug toys. For dogs rewarded with a toy during training or sport, motivation and easy handling may be more important than maximum durability.
Frequently asked questions about durable dog toys
Is there an indestructible dog toy?
Virtually no toy can be considered indestructible for every dog. More durable materials can withstand much more intensive use, but it depends on jaw strength, style of play and the individual dog.
Which toy should I choose for a strong chewer?
Look for a sturdier construction and material suited to the intensity of play, and always choose the right size. If your dog deliberately tears toys apart and swallows pieces, use them under supervision.
How do I know when it is time to replace a toy?
Replace the toy when it is badly cracked or torn, or when pieces start coming off that the dog could swallow. It is a good idea to check the toy's condition regularly.
Is a durable toy suitable for retrieving too?
Yes, if the specific model is designed for retrieving. Consider its size, weight and shape – it should be easy to throw, comfortable for the dog to carry and appropriate for their size.
