How do you choose agility equipment?
Agility is not only about running a complete course. A large part of training focuses on individual skills – jump work, contacts, positions, handling or motivation. Choose equipment according to what you currently need to train and adapt the difficulty to the experience of both dog and handler.
Jumps and targets for technical training
One portable jump can be enough to practise jump work, turns or different handling options. Targets can be used for contact training, positions and precise paw work.
Quick handling before and after a run
Agility leashes combine practical handling with fast removal at the start and quick use again after the finish. Depending on the model, they may include a bungee section or toy for an immediate reward.
Motivation for the individual dog
Some dogs work best for food, others for tugging together or a favourite toy. Choose a motivational aid according to what actually has value for your dog.
What is useful for your own agility training?
You do not need a complete course at home. For technical work, one portable jump, a few targets and a reward that is easy for you to use can often be enough. You can then train individual skills separately and gradually expand the equipment according to what you are currently working on with your dog.
Frequently asked questions about agility equipment
What do I need for agility training at home?
It depends on what you want to train. For many technical exercises, one safely set jump, a target and a suitable reward may be enough. A complete course is not necessary for home training.
What are targets used for in agility?
A target creates a clearly defined place the dog learns to aim for. In agility it can be used, for example, when teaching stopped or running contacts, and it can also help with other precise positions and movements.
How is an agility leash different from a regular leash?
An agility leash is designed for quick handling during training or competitions. Some models combine leash and collar sections or include a toy, so you can reward the dog immediately after a run.
What reward should I use in agility?
Use something that has enough value for the individual dog. It may be a small treat, a tug toy or another favourite toy. It is useful to work with different rewards depending on the exercise and situation.
Is agility equipment suitable for beginners?
Yes, but equipment itself does not replace well-guided training. Beginners should progress gradually, adapt difficulty to the dog’s age and experience, and learn technically demanding elements under the guidance of an experienced trainer.
